THoHH: Final Thoughts
“Some houses are born bad.”
Overall Spook Factor: 👻👻 out of 👻👻👻👻👻
This series is my number one recommendation for those looking to ease themselves into the genre. Jump scares, dramatic irony, and deeply uncomfortable tension knit the scenes together into a tapestry of terror. What can be more universally heart-breaking than coming to terms with your death or the death of whomever you love most? The writing is thoughtful and well-paced, the characters and family dynamics felt organic and genuine, and the mystery and danger kept me watching more than one time through. As a millennial, the comparisons between death and waking up, adulthood and nightmares hit hard. Family members saying their final goodbyes from beyond death cut deeply. My heart sweat, raced, pounded, and broke throughout this series, which doesn’t always happen in horror. What I appreciate most about THoHH is their attention to emotional detail: without the family’s love for each other, the whole thing would have fallen apart.
Unless you have serious apprehensions about any of the content described in the warnings, this is a great series for easing yourself into the genre. A few jump scares scattered throughout the series make it less predictable but never too scary. The spooky atmosphere throughout brings the gothic feel, even in sun-soaked LA, that we’re used to with haunted house movies.
What to Watch Next: Midnight Mass, another Netflix original, is ready for you with blood, death, and Catholicism.
