THoHH, Episode 4: “The Twin Thing”
“Any addict alone is in bad company.”
Spook Factor: 👻👻👻 out of 👻👻👻👻👻
The specter of this episode isn’t just a terrifying ghost looking for a hat; we also see the specter of addiction in a wholly humanizing and heartbreaking way as we move back and forth in time with Luke. The suspense begins with a flash-bang in the first few minutes so we can understand Luke’s terror when a familiar hat reappears.
CWs: suicide, discussion of war and body trauma, addiction, disembodied voices, hallucinations, feelings of death, descriptions of withdrawal
OWs: strong language
Jump Scares (in chronological order):
“Probably just Theo messing around.”
Adult Luke sits on a bench and sees a man in a bowler hat.
Luke hyperventilates under the bed.
What to Expect:
This episode is all about Luke and the way he connects with his family, addictions, and self. In exploring Luke’s traumas as a child at Hill House, we begin to see Luke as a whole person as opposed to simply a disappointment and addict as some of his siblings do. Seeing previous scenes from another’s perspective fills in blanks we didn’t know existed and shows us that we should assume nothing in this series.
